Why Is My Water Pressure Low?

Low water pressure can make showers frustrating, slow down sinks and appliances, and sometimes signal a larger plumbing problem. In South Florida homes, low pressure may be caused by clogged aerators, partially closed valves, leaks, old piping, or city water supply issues. Try these safe troubleshooting steps first. If the issue continues, Amy’s Plumbing can help.

Common Causes of Low Water Pressure

Clogged Faucet Aerators

Mineral buildup inside faucet aerators can restrict water flow at sinks.

Partially Closed Valves

Main shut-off valves or fixture valves that are not fully open can reduce pressure throughout the home.

Pipe Problems

Older pipes, corrosion, or hidden leaks may reduce water flow over time.

Municipal Water Issues

Temporary city maintenance or neighborhood water supply issues can affect pressure.

Step 1: Check Whether the Problem Is Everywhere

Turn on multiple faucets and showers throughout the home. Determine whether low pressure affects:

  • Only one fixture
  • Only hot water
  • Only one bathroom
  • The entire house

This helps narrow down whether the issue is local to one fixture or part of a larger plumbing problem.

Step 2: Clean Faucet Aerators

If only one faucet has low pressure, the aerator may be clogged with debris or mineral buildup.

Carefully unscrew the aerator from the faucet tip and rinse it clean. If buildup is heavy, soaking the aerator briefly may help loosen debris.

Avoid overtightening when reinstalling the aerator.

Step 3: Check the Main Water Valve

Make sure the home's main water shut-off valve is fully open. A partially closed valve can reduce pressure throughout the house.

If you are unsure where the valve is located, review: Main Water Shut-Off Valve Guide

Step 4: Look for Signs of a Leak

Low water pressure combined with damp spots, higher water bills, or sounds of running water may indicate a hidden plumbing leak.

Signs to watch for include:

  • Wet drywall or flooring
  • Water stains
  • Mold or mildew smells
  • Unexpectedly high water bills
  • Warm spots on floors

When Low Water Pressure May Need a Plumber

Problem Possible Cause
Pressure low throughout house Main valve, leak, or pipe issue
Only hot water has low pressure Water heater or supply issue
Pressure suddenly dropped Leak or municipal supply problem
Recurring pressure problems Older plumbing or buildup inside pipes
