Why Does My Toilet Keep Running?
A running toilet can waste a surprising amount of water and increase your utility bill. In many cases, the issue is caused by a worn flapper, float adjustment problem, or fill valve issue. Try these safe DIY troubleshooting steps first. If the toilet keeps running or starts leaking, Amy’s Plumbing can help.
Common Reasons a Toilet Keeps Running
Worn Flapper
The rubber flapper inside the tank may no longer seal properly, allowing water to leak continuously into the bowl.
Float Set Too High
If the float is adjusted too high, water may continue flowing into the overflow tube.
Fill Valve Problems
A worn or dirty fill valve can prevent the tank from shutting off correctly.
Chain Issues
A chain that is too tight or tangled may prevent the flapper from closing completely.
Step 1: Remove the Tank Lid Carefully
Carefully lift the toilet tank lid and place it somewhere safe. Toilet lids are heavy and can crack easily.
Listen for running water and look to see whether water is flowing into the overflow tube inside the tank.
Step 2: Check the Flapper
Flush the toilet and watch the rubber flapper at the bottom of the tank. It should lift and then settle back down evenly.
If the flapper appears warped, cracked, or does not seal fully, it may need replacement.
You can also gently press down on the flapper while the toilet is running. If the sound stops, the flapper may be the issue.
Step 3: Check the Chain
Make sure the chain connecting the handle to the flapper is not tangled or too tight.
The chain should have a small amount of slack so the flapper can close fully after flushing.
Step 4: Check the Water Level
Most toilets have a marked water line inside the tank. If the water level rises above it, water may continuously drain into the overflow tube.
Adjusting the float slightly lower may solve the issue on some toilets.
If you are unsure how your toilet’s float mechanism works, avoid forcing adjustments.
