What Is a Double Check Valve Assembly?

A double check valve assembly (DCVA) is a type of backflow prevention device designed to help protect clean drinking water from contamination caused by reverse water flow. These assemblies use two independently operating check valves to reduce the risk of contaminated water flowing backward into potable water systems.

Double check valve assemblies are commonly used on irrigation systems, fire sprinkler systems, commercial plumbing systems, and other low-to-medium hazard applications throughout Florida.

How a Double Check Valve Assembly Works

A DCVA contains two spring-loaded check valves installed in series inside the assembly body.

These valves allow water to flow in one direction while helping prevent reverse flow conditions that could contaminate drinking water lines.

If one valve begins to fail, the second valve provides additional protection.

Where Double Check Valve Assemblies Are Commonly Used

Application Why a DCVA May Be Used
Irrigation systems Helps protect against reverse water flow contamination
Commercial buildings Protects potable water systems from cross-connections
Fire sprinkler systems Helps isolate stagnant water from potable lines
Multi-unit properties Supports cross-connection protection requirements

Why Annual Testing Is Often Required

Double check valve assemblies contain internal moving parts that naturally wear over time.

Many Florida municipalities and water authorities require annual testing to verify the assembly is still operating properly and protecting the public water supply.

Annual Testing May Help Identify

  • Valve failures
  • Pressure problems
  • Internal leaks
  • Debris buildup
  • Corrosion or deterioration

Helpful related guide: How Often Should a Backflow Preventer Be Tested?

Signs a Double Check Valve Assembly May Need Service

Visible Leaks

Water leaking around the assembly may indicate worn seals or failing valves.

Low Water Pressure

Internal restrictions may reduce flow through the assembly.

Unusual Noises

Humming or chattering may indicate valve instability or pressure fluctuations.

Failed Inspections

Failed testing may reveal internal wear or deteriorating components.

Can a Double Check Valve Assembly Be Repaired?

In many cases, yes.

Common repairs may include:

  • Replacing seals and internal components
  • Cleaning debris from valves
  • Repairing shutoff valves or fittings
  • Correcting pressure-related issues

Assemblies with severe corrosion or structural damage may require replacement instead.
