Toilet Clogged? Here’s What Works and What to Avoid
Almost every homeowner deals with a clogged toilet at some point. But before you reach for the coat hanger or dump half a bottle of chemicals down the bowl, stop — some fixes do more harm than good. At Amy’s Plumbing, we’ve unclogged thousands of toilets across Broward County, and we know what works — and what doesn’t.
✅ DO: Use a Plunger (Properly)
Start with a flange-style plunger (the kind made for toilets, not sinks). Make sure there’s enough water in the bowl to cover the rubber. Give firm, steady pumps for 20–30 seconds. If the clog is minor, this is often enough.
❌ DON’T: Use Boiling Water
Pouring boiling water can crack porcelain toilets. Warm water is okay, but it’s rarely effective on solid blockages. Don’t risk damaging your bowl.
✅ DO: Try a Toilet Auger
A toilet auger (not a sink snake!) can help break up deeper clogs. Insert the tool carefully and crank it forward. If you feel resistance and it clears, flush to test.
❌ DON’T: Dump in Drain Cleaners
Harsh chemical products can corrode seals and rubber parts in your toilet. They also pose a danger to children and pets. Avoid them unless your plumber specifically recommends a safe option.
✅ DO: Call a Licensed Plumber
If your toilet overflows, backs up into the shower, or continues to clog — it may not be the toilet at all. Clogs in the main sewer line often show up in the toilet first. A professional can inspect the issue and clear it completely with the right equipment.
