How to Shut Off Your Main Water Valve in an Emergency
When a pipe bursts or your water heater springs a leak, every second counts. Knowing how to shut off your home’s main water supply can prevent major water damage — and save you thousands in repairs.
□ Step 1: Know What to Look For
Your home’s main shut-off valve is usually a round wheel or lever-style handle attached to a pipe entering the home. It may be located:
- Outside near the water meter
- In the garage (for slab homes)
- In a utility closet or on the side of the house
□ Step 2: How to Turn It Off
- Lever Handle: Turn it a quarter turn clockwise (perpendicular to the pipe = OFF).
- Round Wheel: Turn clockwise until it won’t turn anymore.
Once it’s off, open the lowest faucet in your home (like a tub) to relieve pressure and drain remaining water.
□ Step 3: Label It — and Teach Others
Use a waterproof label or marker to note where the valve is and what it does. Make sure everyone in your home — including babysitters or older children — knows how to find and use it.
